In March 2025, our team at Bolder Learner Tech School (BLTS) participated in the AI Robotics For Good Youth Challenge at the Red Cross Center in Karen-Langata. Despite our dedication and hard work, our robot didn’t perform as expected, and we didn’t secure a win to advance to the global summit in Geneva.
While the outcome was disappointing, it became a pivotal moment for reflection and growth. We realized that to truly excel, we needed to deepen our understanding, refine our skills, and strengthen our foundation.
Igniting a New Vision: The Birth of Our Robotics BootCamp
Motivated by the lessons from the competition, we envisioned a program that would not only address our technical shortcomings but also cultivate resilience, collaboration, and innovation among our students. Thus, the Robotics BootCamp was born—a space dedicated to immersive learning, hands-on experimentation, and holistic development.
Strategic Planning: Building a Comprehensive Learning Experience
Our planning focused on creating a curriculum that balanced technical proficiency with personal growth. Key components included:
- Technical Mastery: Deep dives into robotics fundamentals, including sensor integration, programming logic, and mechanical design.
- Problem-Solving Workshops: Simulated real-world challenges to enhance critical thinking and adaptability.
- Team Collaboration: Group projects to foster communication, leadership, and collective responsibility.
- Emotional Intelligence Sessions: Activities aimed at building resilience, managing stress, and embracing feedback.
- Presentation Skills: Dedicated time for each student to prepare and deliver presentations explaining their projects to non-technical audiences.
What We Learned: From Challenge to Solution
We knew we had to learn from our experience in the competition, so we started by identifying the main problems we faced and designing solutions into the BootCamp structure.
Challenges at AI for Good Competition | BootCamp Solutions |
---|---|
Lack of clear robot documentation and structure | Emphasis on planning, prototyping, and documenting design decisions |
Weak understanding of sensor calibration | Hands-on sessions with sonar, IR sensors among others, plus debugging practice |
Limited collaboration among team members | Team-based problem solving and peer-led instruction encouraged bonding |
Nervousness and lack of presentation skills | Daily stand-ups and final presentations for a live audience to boost confidence |
Solutions didn’t reflect clear social impact | Students framed their projects around real-world community problems |
Lesson Objectives: Cultivating Skills Beyond the Classroom
Our objectives were clear:
- Enhance Technical Skills: Equip students with a robust understanding of robotics systems and programming.
- Foster Innovation: Encourage creative thinking and the development of unique solutions to complex problems.
- Develop Soft Skills: Strengthen abilities such as teamwork, communication, and emotional resilience.
- Promote Real-World Application: Bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation.
- Present with Purpose: Teach students how to explain their work to both technical and general audiences.
Student Presentations: Sharing Knowledge, Building Confidence
One of the most inspiring moments of the BootCamp came during the final day, when students took the stage to present their projects. These presentations weren’t just technical explanations—they were stories. Students shared how their robots solved specific problems, what challenges they encountered, and how they overcame them.
More importantly, they were coached to communicate their work in a way the general public could understand. Parents, mentors, and visiting guests were impressed not just by what the students built, but how clearly and confidently they shared their process. This, we believe, is the mark of true learning—being able to teach others.
Outcomes: A Transformation Beyond Expectations
The BootCamp exceeded our aspirations. Students emerged with:
- Improved Technical Competence: Demonstrated by successful completion of complex projects and challenges.
- Heightened Confidence: A noticeable boost in self-assurance when tackling new tasks and presenting ideas.
- Enhanced Collaboration: Stronger team dynamics and a supportive learning environment.
- Resilience and Adaptability: An increased ability to navigate setbacks and persist through difficulties.
- Public Communication Skills: Students are now capable of articulating their robotics knowledge to diverse audiences.
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Journey of Growth
This BootCamp marked the beginning of a renewed commitment to excellence and innovation at BLTS. We are dedicated to providing ongoing opportunities for our students to explore, learn, and lead in the field of robotics and beyond.
To our students, parents, mentors, and supporters—thank you for being part of this transformative journey. Together, we are building a future where challenges are met with curiosity, determination, and ingenuity.
